The first stringholders where made of iron, and patented in the 1860s, this 88 page book on collecting stringholders starts at that point and shows various styles, in various materials over the years to the 1950s. {If I counted correctly, there are 430 color photos of s.h. in this book} The book is copyrigthed 1996, by Sharon Ray Jacobs, and published by 'L-W BOOK SALES', Gas City, Ind. I have been collectiong stringholders for some years, and this is the ONLY book out there to be found! I find this book a valueable tool. It is a given that pricing will be much higher values in the real world today, concidering the age of the book, but it is still a valueable "GUIDE". This entire book is full color, and gives one page on history and manufactures, and is devided in chapters on various styles. The last two pages show some fakes, and of course, is clearly titled "FAKES". Even with this book being some years older, it is wonderful to have to "track" my collection, and does give some prespective on the collectability of various styles. I applaud the author for the effort, and recommemd this to any stringholder collector! I would guess with this being a small local company that went out of business aprox 3 years ago,[I live 30 min from where the business used to be] that this book will be harder to find, and much more costly in the future, or at least until another stringholder book comes along. The original retail price was $19.95 for paperback. I beleive that was the only way it was offered.

This is the first and only book on string holders. I find the photos good for identification purposes, however, there are some she has pictured that I know are NOT genuine string holders.Prices are way below prices in the real world. It is a good first book, but Sharon, or someone else, needs to go further into the world of string holders. Even with its few faults, I would never give up my copy!!
