Product Description
In thinking about collective design challenges for quilt artists, Sue Pierce came up with the idea of illustrating a deck of playing cards. She invited fifty-three other quilt artists to participate in the project, and each began creating an interpretative art quilt based on a card from the deck. The resulting collection, inspiring in the scope of its imagination, talent, and skill, premiered at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American Art and toured the United States under the auspices of the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES). This book, the catalog for the exhibition, offers splendid full-color reproductions of the quilts, a brief background on each artist, and an exploration of the techniques used in creating the quilts. Third printing.

CARDS AND QUILTS
Rating (4)

Art quilting, a rather new form of expression in the art world, is vividly introduced in this generously illustrated and well written volume. By using the universally recognized theme of a deck of cards, the viewer's eye is more easily drawn to the quilt as a work of art rather than the familiar warm cover. Featuring designs by 54 different artists, the book begins with the traditional quilting method of stitching layers of fabrics together, and branches out into various interpretations and styles. Each featured artist is profiled and the easy to follow techniques will make all of us want to pick up fabric, needle, and thread. - Gail Cooke

This book represents a museum show of all the cards in a full deck, each "card" an exquisit hand-crafted Art Quilt done by a master quilter from each U.S.state, plus two territories. If you want to be knocked out by genuis quilters, this is the book to get. The show was once at the Corchran Gallery in Washington DC.At one time the authors had a supply of decks of cards duplicating the quilts.
