I got this as a gift for Father's Day. It transports you to another time and place. The photographic subjects--of not just people and the interiors but of their interaction-- is of particular interest. Some of the photographs, as works of art, are stunning in their composition, namely those of the Queen Mary and the Andrea Doria. I am considering purchasing another one, just to cut out some of the prints for framing. It would be great if the publisher offered a book with larger prints.
The layout of the book is clear and serves not just as a picture book but as an interesting read. There is one language missing: Italian. Some of the most beautiful liners were built in Genova and it would have been fitting for that language to be included as well. This would have resulted in more photographs with the additional pages. Absolutely beautiful.

THE GREAT LINERS REALLY COME ALIVE IN THIS BOOK!

This is a truly wonderful book. How utterly refreshing to FINALLY see high-quality, large format images of so many beloved liners! At last! At last!

The book is, frankly, a steal for the money and should be priced much higher for the quality of the production and the glossy paper. Yes, the book is in three languages, and so what? It will reach a wider audience, and the additional text adds perhaps a dozen extra pages. The multi-language format is handled in a readily understood manner and is not confusing (as is so often the case).

The book is also filled with people! Its nice seeing children playing on board, the rich napping in first-class deck chairs, and the crew hard at work! I love it! These liners really come alive!

In short, this is a GORGEOUS book.

An incredible picture library.

There is something about big ships - especially (though not exclusively) big passenger liners and this is a very big book simply crammed full of pictures of those ships.

OK, let me get my complaint out of the way first. This is a large coffee table book with 350 glossy pages just full of historic photographs of the highest quality. The problem is the entire book is repeated 3 times - first in English, then in German and finally in French. Take the Prologue, for example; This takes up 6 pages with two being devoted to each language. Whilst the photographs are not repeated, each does have three captions.

The reader can, therefore, read only one third of this book after having also paid for the other two thirds simply becomes it comes as a complete package. All things considered, you get a lot less book for your money.

Having said that, the photographs (all of which are B&W) are of the highest calibre and are reproduced on paper of equally high quality. Personally, I never tire of looking at images of great ships and this collection is just about as good as they get.

I was extremely impressed by this book. Note that it is largely a picture book, illustrated exclusively with black and white photographs - but what photographs!! When well done, black and white photgraphs are superior to those in color, and the photos in this book are very, very well done and expertly printed on each page.

What text there is (and it is printed in English, German, and French) is intelligent, and the each photo has an informative caption (also in all 3 languages).

The various Dover picture books by William H. Miller are nice, but I'm afraid they can't hold a candle to this book. This is a very high quality, superior book, and I highly recommend it.
